The rules for using this site, and what happens to anything you send it.

Who runs this

Tariffed is run from Canada by Tyler, a sole operator. It is independent. It is not affiliated with the Government of Canada, with United States Customs and Border Protection, with the United States International Trade Commission, or with any business listed on the site.

Write to hello@tariffed.ca about anything on this page.

Using this site means you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the site.

What a tariff reading is

The site looks up a tariff code on lists the United States government publishes. It reports what those lists say about a code somebody typed in. That is the whole of it.

The site does not classify goods. Deciding which tariff code a product belongs under is customs business under 19 CFR 111 in the United States, and it takes a licensed United States customs broker. Nobody here holds that licence. Nothing on this site is customs advice, legal advice, tax advice or an import ruling, and using the site does not make you a client of anyone.

Where a six digit heading holds both taxed and untaxed goods, the site says the reading needs review. It says that because six digits cannot settle the question, and a guess would be worse than an answer of "we do not know".

The published lists change. A reading is correct as at the date shown beside it and no later. Confirm anything that carries money with a licensed broker or with the border agency itself.

Listings, corrections and removals

A listing in the registry comes from one of two places. Either somebody sent it through the form on the site, or we read a news report in which the owner or a manager of the business said the United States duty hits what the business ships south. A listing of the second kind says so on the card, and it links to the report.

A listing says a duty applies to goods of that kind. It is not a statement that the business is in financial trouble, and it is not a statement about how the business is run. What a duty costs, and who ends up paying it, depends on the sale.

We read submissions for spam and for obvious errors before they go up. We do not audit them. We take no responsibility for the accuracy of a listing, a description, a link or a tariff code that somebody else supplied.

Any business may have its listing corrected or taken down. Send the request from an address at the business, or use the update form on the registry page. A request from the owner goes to the front of the queue. We may also edit or remove any listing at our own discretion, for any reason.

How you may use the site

You may read the site, follow its links, buy from the businesses it lists, and share a link to any page on it. That is free and it needs no permission.

You may not:

• copy the registry in bulk, or republish a substantial part of it anywhere else;
• scrape, crawl or automate access to the site beyond ordinary reading;
• use the listings to build a mailing list, a sales list or any other list for soliciting the businesses named;
• send a listing about a business you have no knowledge of, or a listing you know to be wrong;
• submit anything unlawful, defamatory, or designed to attack or overload the site.

We may block access to anyone who breaks these rules.

Who owns what is here

The software that runs this site, the design of the pages, the wording on them, and the registry as a collection all belong to Tyler, the operator of Tariffed. Copyright 2026. No licence to copy or reuse any of it is granted by publishing it here.

The tariff schedules and the customs notices the site reads are United States government publications. We claim nothing over those. We do claim the work of selecting them, reading them and arranging the result.

Business names, logos and product names belong to the businesses that own them, and appear here to identify those businesses.

What we do with what you send

What the forms collect

Two forms on this site collect information, and both are voluntary. The registry form asks for the business, its town and province, what it sells, an optional set of tariff codes, an optional share of sales going to the United States, an optional email address, and an optional note. The form on the home page asks for an email address and a few details about a store.

We use what you send to write or correct a registry listing, and to reply to you. We do not sell it. We do not rent it. We do not pass it to a data broker.

Where it goes

A submission reaches a private notification channel we watch, and it is written to the request log of the company that hosts the site. Some of that sits on servers outside Canada, so it is open to the law of the country where it sits. Send nothing you would not want held that way. Write to us and we will name the services we use.

Email

An email address you give us is used to answer you and to sort out the listing. We do not add you to a mailing list from a form on this site. If we ever start sending update emails, joining will be a separate choice you make on purpose, and every message will carry an unsubscribe link, as Canada's anti-spam law requires.

Your rights

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, and ask us to delete it. Write to hello@tariffed.ca and we will answer within thirty days.

Cookies and tracking

This site sets no cookies and runs no advertising tracker. The host keeps ordinary request logs, which include an IP address, and we use short lived counts of those addresses to stop one script from flooding a form.

Two buttons on the home page tell us they were pressed, so we can see which part of the page people use. That count carries no name, no email address and no identifier for you.

Every page also loads a visit counter run by the company that hosts the site. It records the page you opened, the country you opened it from, the kind of device, and the page that sent you here. It counts a handful of actions as well, such as a search finishing on the check page or a form being sent from the registry. It sets no cookie and holds no identifier for you. What you type into the check box is read in your browser and is never sent to us.

No warranty, and the limit on our liability

The site is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. We do not promise that a reading is accurate, that a listing is accurate, that a link works, or that the site is available.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss that follows from using this site or from relying on anything on it. That includes duty paid, duty assessed, a shipment held, a sale lost, or a decision taken on the strength of a reading. Check anything that carries money with a licensed customs broker before you act on it.

Changes, and the law that applies

We may change these terms. The date at the top says when the current version came into force, and using the site after that date means you accept it.

These terms are governed by the law of Manitoba and the law of Canada that applies in it. The courts of Manitoba have jurisdiction.
